I am always down for an action-packed film with a good plot but I love it even more when there's a female lead, especially one where there's an actress I haven't seen in this type of role before. Viola Davis, Gina Rodriguez, and Kristen Stewart are just a few of the women I have witnessed step into roles and fully envelope into them.
No woman trains for a role harder than Viola Davis has From "The Woman King" to her upcoming release of "G20." For "Widows" Davis added intense five hours per day, thrice-weekly weight training sessions to her regular workout routine. She also focused on martial arts and running, with a precise emphasis on developing the technique needed for efficient and natural-looking running three months before pre-production.
While Ana De Armas has widened her range from "Knives Out" to AppleTV's "Ghosted" she is quickly becoming a force to reckon with. This Summer "John Wick's Ballerina" hits theaters and the dedication to this role already has me wanting to see this film even more. Armas underwent extensive training for her role, including strength conditioning, stunt training, and weapon practice. She worked with a trainer to enhance her fitness, spent hours mastering fight choreography, and practiced with various weapons, particularly knives to execute looking like a real assassin. Her training was tailored to her strengths in kicking and close-quarters combat, lasting about 3-4 months, with a daily 4-5 hours routine dedicated to gym workouts, stunts, and weapon practice.
Along with her dedication to this role, Armas was also dedicated to making sure there was a woman's voice in the production so her one request she made before signing on to it. “It was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy. And I was like, ‘That’s not going to work.’ So I interviewed, like, five or six female writers. We hired Emerald Fennell, which I was so proud of,” she said. Fennell has written episodes on shows like “Killing Eve” and “Promising Young Woman.” She also works as an actress, starring Camila Parker Bowles in “The Crown”.
Women are continuing to add new meaning to the word badass and one of those women continually adding to it is Kerry Washington. She captured our hearts in Scandal and has continued to keep us on the edge with Little Fires Everywhere. On May 9th we will fall in love with her all over again in "Shadow Force" An estranged couple, each marked by a deadly bounty on their heads, forced to go on the run with their young son. Every hiding shadow is a threat, they must evade their former employer—, determined to silence them for good. The stakes are high, and they're desperate to protect their child and uncover the truth behind the betrayal that has turned their lives into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Washington writes on her Instagram caption:
"Every drop of sweat. Every bruise. Every scream. Every 5am training session. Every ‘let’s go again,’” “I poured my heart, soul, and body into becoming this badass you’ll see on screen in #ShadowForce.”
“This role stretched me in ways I never imagined. It demanded strength, fearlessness, discipline, and a whole lot of grit. I’m sooooo proud of the work—and even more grateful to this talented team that helped me rise to the challenge."
We can uplift women, the theater community, and exceptional films by not only watching these stories unfold on screen but also by sharing our experiences. Let's uplift each other and celebrate the art that moves us. Check out more female badass movies here.
